The Jewish National Council of Palestine today decided to ask Dr. Chaim Weizmann to testify before the United Nations fact-finding committee when the body holds hearings in Palestine.
“The Jewish National Council sees in Dr, Weizmann’s silence harm, and in his appearance before the committee an asset for the Jewish cause,” David Remez, chairman of the Council said today at a press conference.
He admitted that the question of Dr. Weizmann’s testimony had been under discussion between the Council and the Jewish Agency, but declined to comment when asked whether the Council’s bid to Dr. Weizmann did not encroach on the preogatives of the Agency.
The Jewish Agency executive today received a written request from the Hashomer Hatzair asking it to agree to the latter group making a separate appearance before the U.N. inquiry committee. It is understood that if the Agency will not give its consent, the Hashomer Hatzair, which advocates the establishment of a binational state, will not appear.
The memoranda which the Jewish organizations in Palestine will present to the inquiry committee will contain an analysis of the present emergency regulations issued by the Palestine Government and an explanation of how their implementation affects the life of the country, Remez said.
