The Chaim Weizmann chair of international law and peace is to be established at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, according to a decision reached today at the closing session of the annual conference of the board of governors and the academic council of the Hebrew University held here under the chairmanship of Prof. Leonard S. Ornstein, rector of the University of Utrecht.
The chair, which is named for Dr. Chaim Weizmann, former president of the World Zionist Organization, has been endowed to the extent of $75,000 by Sir Montague Burton, prominent British Zionist and merchant. Sir Montague, who was recently knighted, has also established an endowment fund of $375,000 for five chairs of peace in English universities.
Dr. Judah L. Magnes, chancellor of the Hebrew University, in submitting his report on the University’s development in the last two years, declared that the institution had been hampered by a lack of funds. He submitted to the board of governors a budget of $175,000, as compared with last year’s budget of $215,000.
The conference resolved to request Dr. Magnes, in cooperation with the Jewish Agency, to make representations to the Palestine government, to facilitate the entry of Jewish students into Palestine.
Dr. Cyrus Adler, president of the Jewish Thcological Seminary of America and of the American Jewish Committee; Judge Julian W. Mack, Mrs. Sol Rosenbloom of Pittsburgh, Dr. Maurice Hexter, member of the Jewish Agency Executive, and Joseph Hyman, secretary of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, were the Americans who participated in the conference.
