Although Wellesley College authorities could not be reached for statement in connection with charges the Miss Olga Steiner has been removed as a German instructor because she is Jewish, it was learned from reliable sources today that Miss Steiner is being replaced by Miss Melitta Gerhard, whose parents, were Jews and who was dismissed from the University of Kiel, Germany, for that reason.
An informant who requested that her name be withheld told the Jewish Daily Bulletin that “it is to be regretted that the matter has caused so much controversy. Miss Steiner’s removal has nothing to do with her political and religious views nor with her ancestry. Miss Steiner has completed her five years of service and is being replaced with an individual who has a broader training in the field of German.”
Dr. Natalie Wipplinger is head of the German Department at Wellesley.
