A number of influential West Bank leaders today and yesterday condemned the terrorist attack on a synagogue in Vienna last Saturday. It was the first time that West Bank notables condemned a Palestinian terrorist attack.
Bethlehem Mayor Elias Freij termed the attack “an act of brutality which distorted the image of the Palestinian people.” He stressed that Arabs have an abiding respect for the holy places of all religions. Condemnations were also issued by Nablus Mayor Bassam Shaka, Gaza Mayor Rashad a-Shawa, and Raymonda Tawil, a journalist and writer from Ramallah who is a staunch Arab nationalist.
