A plea for “normalization of relations” between Israel and Germany was made here by Prof. Theodor Heuss, President of the German Federal Republic, in an interview which appeared in the final issue of the Neue Zeitung, German-language daily of the United States High Commission.
The veteran German leader told Alfred Joachim Fischer, a Jewish journalist, that when he affixed his signature to the Israel reparations agreement, he was glad that that moment had finally come about.
“It was a necessary act, ” he said, “which should now be followed by normalization of relations, or at least by a more unbending attitude. It is true that strong inner tensions against Germany persist in Israel, but a relaxation has become noticeable.”
