Chancellor Willy Brandt said today that West Germany wants to restore diplomatic relations with the Arab states “but the situation is too complicated and we would be doing the wrong thing if we took the initiative in the matter.” Most of the Arab states severed relations with Bonn after its establishment of diplomatic relations with Israel in 1965. Chancellor Brandt made his remarks at a question and answer session following a lunch at the Foreign Press Club. He said that before his government made any moves toward diplomatic ties with the Arabs “we have to make sure first that the security and stability of the area will be ensured.”
