Western hopes that Russian museums have many artworks stolen from Jews by the Nazis are “exaggerated,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement. But the ministry reaffirmed its commitment to return works of art stolen from Jewish owners during the Holocaust. The Russian delegation at this month’s conference in Washington on Holocaust assets announced that Moscow was ready to return such art, but experts say restitution of these items will be difficult under a Russian art law passed last year.
