While the Zionist Congress in Basle was marking the 27th anniversary of the death of Dr. Theodor Herzl, father of political Zionism, Palestine Jewry was also commemorating this eventful day in Jewish history with the opening of the Herzl room in the Jerusalem headquarters of the Jewish National Fund.
The Herzl room contains all of the great Zionist leader’s personal effects as well as the originals of his correspondence with kings and rulers. Tonight a brilliantly illuminated electric sign with Herzl’s famous words: “If you will, it is no legend” was dedicated on the roof of the Jewish National Fund’s building. These words form the motto of Dr. Herzl’s famous five-volume novel, “Altneuland.”
Speakers at the Herzl memorial services included Professor Struck, on behalf of the Jewish National Fund; Col. Frederick Kisch, on bechalf of the Zionist Executive; Isaac Ben Zvi, on behalf of the Jewish National Fund, and veterans of the first Zionist Congress.
