The White House acknowledged today that it had received a telegram from Mrs. Judy Silver Shapiro, bride of Soviet Jewish activist Gavriel Shapiro, but did not disclose its contents or what action if any would be taken.
Gerald Warren, Deputy Presidential Press Secretary, told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency that the telegram had been referred to “the appropriate people in the White House and the agencies who are looking into it.” He said he had “no indication when there may be a development.”
Mrs. Shapiro, a Cincinnati social worker, was married to Shapiro in Moscow last Thursday but was forced to leave the Soviet Union Monday when her visa expired. Her husband was arrested at the airport and has been Jailed. She disclosed in Cincinnati yesterday that she had telegraphed President Nixon to “help my husband get out of the Soviet Union.”
