A “White Paper” charging that more than one-third of the Jews of Egypt, victims of Nasser persecution, have fled or been expelled from Egypt, was issued here today by the World Jewish Congress.
The document listed the arrival of each Egyptian Jew in Europe, including the vessel on which he was brought and the port where he debarked. The total number accounted for by the WJC was 14,102. Most of these people, the Congress paper added, were forced to flee as penniless refugees. In its picture of the situation of Egyptian Jewry, the Congress details the economic measures, discriminatory laws and internment proceedings of which Egyptian Jews have been the victims.
Meanwhile, A.L. Easterman, political secretary of the WJC, called this week-end on W.D. Ormsby-Gore, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, for a discussion of the international aspects of Nasser’s persecution of Jews. Among the matters discussed was the question of compensation and restitution for property and possessions confiscated by the Egyptian authorities or abandoned as a result of Egyptian measures against the Jews and other minorities.
