The widow of a prominent Israeli figure in the Iran-Contra scandal reported that an apartment she owns was burglarized and secret material, including classified documents, tape recordings and other papers of her late husband, are missing.
Police are investigating the complaint from Judy Nir-Moses, who was married to Amiram Nir, an adviser on terrorism to Shimon Peres when the Labor Party leader was prime minister.
Nir is said to have been an important liaison in secret arms deals involving the covert sale of weapons by the United States to Iran, the cash from which was diverted to finance Nicaraguan rebels, known as Contras.
Nir is believed to have died in an air crash in Mexico in November 1987.
Israeli newspapers said the police indicated the break-in was a “highly professional” job.
Some newspapers suggested that the documents stolen could implicate high government officials whose alleged role in the Iran-Contra affair is still under investigation.
