Assemblyman Albert D. Schanzer of Brooklyn has promised to introduce at the next session of the New York state legislature a bill which would prohibit state or municipal examinations of any sort to be held on a Jewish Sabbath or holyday. This promise is contained in a letter written by the Assemblyman to Rabbi Louis D. Gross, editor of a Jewish weekly in Brooklyn, who had called Mr. Schanzer’s attention to the fact that an examination for a New York State Scholarship to Cornell University had been set for Saturday, June 7, and that many other examinations likewise fall on holydays of religious groups, with the resultant injustice to Orthodox members of the respective faiths who are prevented from taking these examinations on these holydays.
“I feel certain that all right-minded members of the Legislature will agree with me in their vote upon such a measure,” wrote the Assemblyman. “The Jewish Sabbath Alliance, of which Dr. Bernard Drachman is the head, also contemplates emphatic action to correct this injustice, and I have promised to cooperate with the Alliance.”
