The Jewish Welfare Fund of Winnipeg announced today that tuition fees for all community-supported Jewish schools will be raised 10 percent for the coming school year. In making the announcement, S.L. Morantz, chairman of the welfare fund’s education committee, said that Winnipeg’s day school tuition fees were probably the lowest in North America.
All families sending children to the Winnipeg Talmud Torah, the Peretz Folk schools and the South End Branch of the Talmud Torah will be affected by the increase. Mr. Morantz said that the increases were made necessary by the rising costs of Jewish education, specifically a ten percent increase in teacher salaries and a five percent contribution this year to a new pension fund.
The official also disclosed that his committee was reviewing all fee assessments to determine whether the basic fee should not be raised for families judged able to pay a larger portion of the actual costs of education of their children. He said some families pay the full cost and the rest are billed on a sliding scale based on ability to pay. The review is the first family-by-family study in four years.
