The winter season began throughout Israel today with heavy downpours from the north to the Negev, where even Elath, on the Gulf of Akaba, received substantial rainfall.

The rains were particularly good news for citrus growers, who must have either a heavy rain or substantial irrigation for their trees before the fruit is picked. Although this season’s crop, which is shortly due to be gathered, is expected to be somewhat smaller than last year’s, the higher world price will probably bring in more foreign currency than last year’s record crop. Fruit picking work is expected to cut the number of unemployed substantially.
