Lord Winterton’s appointment as a British delegate to the Evian refugee-aid conference, opening July 6, “illustrates the spirit of compromise with which the British Government is entering the conference, the Yorkshire Observer, important provincial daily, commented today, asserting that Britain “grudgingly Acquiesced” to President Roosevelt’s proposal for the conference.
The Jewish Chronicle demanded editorially that Palestine be given an opportunity to afford the maximum possibility to assist in solving the immediate refugee problem. It expressed the hope that Lord Winterton’s appointment would not prejudice the possibility of using Palestine to the utmost in assisting refugees.
“The appointment of Winterton cannot fail to arouse serious misgivings,” the editorial declared, pointing to Lord Winterton’s pro-Arab utterances and statements as creating the impression that he was “out of sympathy with the Jews in general.”
