Wise Urges Zion Jews to Unite

“There is more unity in American Jewish life than there was a year ago,” Dr. Wise declared.

“The boycott has ceased to be a Jewish measure. The instinct of the Jewish masses initiated the boycott and the conscience of the American people carries it on.”

BRITISH-TRANSJORDAN PACT

The new agreement between the British government and the government of Emir Abdullah of Transjordania was characterized by Dr. Wise as an ominous sign. He declared that he feared “further attempts to fortify the fiction of an independent Transjordania, as if this were a reality.”

“It is clear,” Dr. Wise declared, “that our internecine strife gives the Mandatory power an excuse for procrastination in carrying out the Balfour Declaration and the terms of the Mandate. The British government can point to division among the Jews as a further reason for inaction, delay and obstructionist tactics against the Jewish settlements in Palestine, and this at one of the most critical moments in Jewish history.”

Speaking as one of the leading members of the consultative committee of the American Jewish Congress, the American Jewish Committee and the B’nai B’rith, Dr. Wise said it was unfair to speak of the difference between the diplomatic action of the American Jewish Committee and the public action of the American Jewish Congress, since both believed in diplomatic action whenever possible, with the Congress believing in public action whenever necessary.

Dr. Wise conferred today with the American Ambassador, Robert Worth Bingham, a personal friend. Conferences are also scheduled with leaders of the Joint Foreign Committee and Anglo-Jewish Zionist leaders.
