The executive committee of the World Jewish Congress today cabled Polish Premier Edward Osubka-Morawski, demanding of the Polish Government that “more stringent measures be taken to safeguard Jewish life against wanton attack and destruction.”
Expressing its dismay at yesterday’s pogrom in Kielce, the Congress cable expressed appreciation for the steps taken by the government to curb anti-Semitism, but added that “we cannot overlook the fact that the Polish Government in Warsaw is the one responsible for the maintenance of peace and order in the country, and consequently for the protection of Jewish life and property… The Jewish people all over the world look to the Polish Government to protect the remnant of Polish Jewry and put an end to the murder of defenseless Jewish men, women and children.”
The cable, which was signed by Rabbi Stephen S. Wise, president of the Congress, said that world Jewry had “noted with disappointment that the Catholic Church, except for a single statement by a high dignitary, has not used its powerful influence with the masses to counteract the anti-Semitic movement.” It also pointed out that the Peasant Party, headed by Stanislaw Mikolajczyk “has not yet uttered a single word of protest against the constantly spreading anti-Jewish riots.”
