Four Jews were among the councillors elected to the newly merged “Uni-city” of Winnipeg in which the city of Winnipeg and the surrounding suburbs were amalgamated. These four are: 25-year-old Lawrie Cherniack, Abe Yanofsky. Morris Kaufman and Joe Zuken. Cherniack is a son of Manitoba’s Minister of Finances, Saul Cherniack, and grandson of Alter Cherniack, a Winnipeg Jewish pioneer. Yanofsky is an ex-mayor of a Winnipeg suburb and an international chess master. Zuken is Canada’s only Communist municipal councillor.
Among the Board of Education trustees there were six Jews elected including 19-year-old Benjy Levin, the youngest public official elected in Canada. Avrom Kushner, one of those elected, is the son of Hayim Nachman Kushner, former mayor of West Kildonan, Two women were among them; 25-year-old teacher Gloria Mendelson and Bertha Arnold whose husband is Canadian Jewish Congress executive director in Western Canada.
