On the eve of the second session of the 86th Congress, the National Council of Jewish Women appealed today for the speedy enactment of pending legislation to meet “the nation’s dire needs for educational growth, better housing, and to combat Juvenile delinquency.” The call was coupled with an expression of concern lest “these urgent requirements be neglected in the heat of election campaigns this year.”
In a statement issued at the Council’s national headquarters here, Mrs. Charles Hymes, of Minneapolis, president of the NCJW, asserted that “inadequate schools represent the Number One problem of the United States today, and there can be no excuse for Congress to continue its backsliding of the past year–the past decade–in failing to meet the emergency through federal aid for school construction and teachers’ salaries.”
