Women with a breast cancer genetic defect are less likely to develop breast cancer than previously thought, according to two studies published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. The BRCA1 and BRCA2 defects have been found to occur in a higher rate among Ashkenazi Jewish women than in the rest of the female population. Experts say that the results of the studies suggest that there should be no widespread testing of women for the BRCA genes.
