President Kennedy today hailed the Women’s American ORT, which is opening its 16th biennial convention here tomorrow, as an organization that “long has made outstanding contributions to the skills, independence and freedom of people throughout a large part of the world.”
The message from Mr. Kennedy was disclosed by Mrs. Joseph C. Gayl of this city, national president of Women’s American ORT. More than 1,200 delegates, representing nearly 60,000 members in 419 chapters throughout the country, are expected to attend the four-day parley.
Principal speaker at the convention will be Daniel Mayer, former member of several French cabinets and chairman of the executive committee of the World ORT Union. Other speakers will include F. Schrager, director of ORT in France; Georges Emsalem, director of ORT in Algeria; Joseph Shapiro, president of ORT-Israel; and Dr. Akiva Kohane, member of the Joint Distribution Committee’s staff in Geneva.
