The current sixth plenary session of the Intergovernmental Committee on Refugees is likely to be devoted entirely to a discussion of budget matters, as a result of the British announcement yesterday that they were no longer willing to foot half the bills for the committee’s operations.
Grave fears have been expressed that as a result of the British move the entire IGCR program may collapse, unless other member nations agree to make contributions. Sir Herbert Emerson, the committee’s director, pointed out today that while the IGCR must temporarily assume the duties of the new International Refugee Organization, its budget is only $9,000,000, while the IRO has asked $40,000,000 for its first year of operations.
A sub-committee has been appointed to attempt to work out plans for the committee’s future financing.
