The works of Isaak Babel, one of the Jewish writers who disappeared during the purges of the Stalin era, are appearing for the first time since then in the Soviet Union, it was reported here from Moscow.
One of the most popular Soviet writers in the 1920’s, Babel disappeared in 1938. His death occurred in 1941, according to recent Soviet biographical sources which do not include any information on whether he was executed or died of disease or privation in a Soviet forced labor camp.
