The second World Congress for Hebrew Culture was opened here last night by Israel President Itzhak Ben Zvi in the presence of some 250 delegates who assembled here from all parts of the world. The largest delegation consists of some 100 persons from the United States.
The Congress is sponsored jointly by the Department of Culture and Education of the World Zionist Organization and the World Union for Hebrew Culture. The first congress was held in 1950.
Zalman Shazar, member of the Jewish Agency executive, who was the major speaker at last night’s session, spoke about the state of Hebrew culture in countries outside Israel and said that the main outcome of this congress is expected to be a complete reorganization of the movement to spread Hebrew culture. Premier Moshe Sharett spoke briefly and greetings were read from Chief Rabbis Isaac Herzog and Yitzhak Nissim.
