A conference on Jewish emigration opened here today under the auspices of the HICEM Emigration Association, which includes the Hebrew Immigrant Aid and Sheltering Society of the United States and the Jewish Colonization Association. The sixty delegates also include representatives of affiliated organizations in countries of transit, emigration and immigration.
Among those attending the parley are Abraham Herman, Samuel Telsey and I. L. Asofsky, of New York, president, vice-president and general manager, respectively, of HIAS; David J. Schweitzer and Dr. Bernhard Kahn, of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee; and Max Gottschalk of Brussels.
A report was read on ten years of the HICEM’s work. Prof. William Qualid of Paris spoke on “The Present State of International Migrations.” The conference will continue until July 1.
The parley is of a technical nature. It will review the past ten years in Jewish emigration work the world over and will examine the present situation with a view to working out a plan for future activities.
Special attention will be given to the German situation and a plan submitted for aiding Jews to emigrate from the Reich.
