A decision to send a delegation to the United States to confer with American Jewish leaders on matters affecting OSE policy was adopted by the executive committee of the World Union OSE at its two-day meeting here. The executive also decided that the OSE should become an associate member of the World Jewish Congress.
The session voted thanks to the South African Jewish Appeal for its “continuous and uninterrupted support” to the OSE, and to the Joint Distribution Committee “for its support in the past and for its present financial aid” in North Africa and Europe. At the same time the executive “noted with regret” that the JDC is giving no financial support to the OSE work in Israel and that it is “continuously reducing its financial aid” to OSE branches in France and in Italy.
It was reported at the session that the World Union OSE maintains today 190 institutions conducting medical and social welfare activities for Jews in 29 countries. More than 1,000 persons are employed in these institutions, including 214 doctors and 302 nurses. About 75,000 children and 15,000 adults have been treated in OSE institutions during the last year. The total OSE budget last year was $1,500,000.
