The European section of the World Jewish Congress today began a four-day conference to discuss plans for the organization’s activities next year and to make preparations for the second all-European conference which is scheduled to be held in Geneva February 15. Delegates from 12 countries are attending the meeting.
The parley heard reports on efforts to establish Jewish rehabilitation funds in Germany and Austria similar to those already set up, with the assistance of the Congress, in Greece, Hungary, Italy and Rumania. Similar action was outlined for Czechoslovakia, while Adalbert Winterstein explained some of the difficulties involved in the organization of such a fund in Slovakia. Raffaele Cantoni, of the Italian section, reported that the rehabilitation fund in that country had already been put to use assisting victims of the war.
Dr. David Petegorsky, executive director of the American Jewish Congress, stressed the importance of safeguarding the political status of European Jews, as well as sending them relief supplies at this time and providing methods for restoring their property.
