The World Jewish Congress today informed Prof. Julian Hurley, director-general of UNESCO, that it will not send an observer to the forthcoming sessions of that body, scheduled to begin next week in Beirut, as a protest against the decision to hold the conference in the Lebanese capital.
A message signed by A.L. Easterman, political secretary of the W.J.C., stated that the “Lebanese Government is pursuing a war of aggression against the people of Israel in formal alliance with other states and is executing a policy of discrimination and persecution against Jewish citizens and residents.”
Meanwhile, conferences are now taking place here between members of the W.J.C. executive and representatives of 10 European Jewish communities, Argentina and DP committees from Germany and Austria. The parleys will formulate the future program of the W.J.C. on the reconstruction and cultural needs of Jewish communities in Europe and the needs of the inmates of the DP camps via-a-vie developments in the state of Israel.
