The European General Council of the World Jewish Congress opened its session here this morning following the conclusion of the meeting of the organization’s executive. Dr. Nahum Goldmann, acting president of the W.J.C., addressing the Council, said that world Jewry is losing its leaders. They are going and will go to Israel, he stated, and are leaving the Jews outside Israel without political and cultural direction.
Dr. Goldmann announced that the World Jewish Congress will open an office in Germany in order to obtain reliable information “for the benefit of world public opinion.” He emphasized that the problem of the Jews in Germany has practically been solved by their departure from the country, but added that there is still a danger in Germany, “even if not a single Jew remained there”.
Dealing with the situation of Jews in the Arab countries, Dr. Goldmann stated that the World Jewish Congress accomplished a major task by putting the case of the Jews in those countries before the United Nations. He reported that despite a number of “incidents,” the situation of the Jews in Arab countries has improved. The World Jewish Congress, he declared, has taken very seriously its role of enjoying a consultative status in the United Nations and has been successful in approaching governments with regard to Jewish rights in various countries.
