The Wiener Library, one of the world’s largest collections of documents and periodicals on Nazi persecution of Jews, problems of refugees and minorities and international Jewish affairs, is threatened with dissolution, a group of public leaders asserted in a public letter here.
Signed by Chief Rabbi Israel Brodie, members of Parliament and British scholars, the warning said that new premises and financial support must be provided for the Library which is housed in a building scheduled for demolition in a reconstruction program.
If assistance cannot be provided to re-house the Library, established here in 1939, “British historical research would be the loser, ” the statement said. “Indeed, we believe Britain would be deprived of what has come to be appreciated in the field of historical scholarship as a very important international asset, ” the signatories declared.
