Former SS Sturmbandsfuhrer Friedrich Rosshammer, 64, went on trial Monday in West Berlin for complicity in the mass murders of 140,000 Jews from Italy, Bulgaria, Rumania and Czechoslovakia during World War II. Rosshammer was head of the security police in the province of Verona, Italy beginning in Feb. 1944 and reportedly directed the seizure, imprisonment and deportation of Italian Jews. Prior to going to Italy he served as “government expert” in the Jewish affairs department of the German Security Ministry in Berlin from 1942-44. He was arrested in Wupperthal in Jan. 1968.
