A world convention of Ashkenazi and Sephardic synagogues, attended by 700 delegates, among them 650 representing Orthodox rabbinic and lay bodies in America and Europe, opened here tonight. Among those attending were Britain’s Chief Rabbi Immanuel Jakobovitz and the Grand Rabbi of France, Dr. Jacob Kaplan. A large delegation also arrived from the United States. The convention will last three days.
It is the first parley of its kind to be held, and is intended to rally world Orthodox leaders. Speeches and resolutions denouncing Conservative and Reform Judaism were reportedly in preparation.
