The London Times reports the following incident from Germany:

An enormous procession headed by a band and a man bearing a long pole from which dangled a pair of old shoes marched through Stettin, the capital of Pomerania, on Sunday. The object of this strange parade, arranged by the local National Socialists, was to return a gift that had been made to the Nazi Winter relief fund.

Zest is always lent to such demonstrations if the person to be pilloried is Jewish, and the donor in this case was a Jewess, alleged to live in comfort on the income from ample investments. She was not at home when the callers arrived, and the shoes were with ceremony tied to her balcony.

ASKS FOR SURVEY ON JEWS IN PROFESSIONS

The Reconstructionist, discussing the question of Jews in the professions in America, says:

We believe that we should see the problem as a Jewish problem, and proceed to think of a solution in terms of Jewish life. Instead of permitting, nay encouraging, the imposition of a solution from without, in the form of discriminatory restrictions set up by the universities, we should attempt to educate our own people in the nature and seriousness of the situation. This would involve a thorough-going study of the facts, the creation of a system of vocational guidance, and the establishment of agencies to facilitate the dissemination of vital information to the growing generation of Jews.

GUARDIAN COMMENTS ON POLISH AID DRIVE

The Manchester Guardian, under the caption “Three Million Jews in Distress,” discusses the relief campaign which the Jews in England have started for Polish Jewry:

One-sixth of the money is to be devoted to educational institutions ## Poland and the remainder to immediate and constructive work, including medical relief, relief through credits, subsidies to orphanages and to funds for the feeding of school children, financial support for food kitchens, provision of clothing, and schemes for the assistance of emigrants from Poland. Provision is also made for financial help for the Polish Jewish poor during the forthcoming festival of Passover.

APPROVES DELAY IN AJC ELECTIONS

Alfred M. Cohen, B’nai B’rith leader, writing in the B’nai B’rith Magazine, says:

I am gratified with the decision arrived at by the American Jewish Congress to recall the holding of elections in April of delegates to a session of that body to arrange for a World Jewish Congress.

I urged that the elections be recalled. Of course, others did the same. It must have been perfectly clear to the proponents of the elections that if they proceeded with their plans and set a date and named a place for the holding of a World Jewish Congress, they would have given a big title to a small and unrepresentative gathering.

It has been an open secret for some time that the more sober-minded in the American Jewish Congress detected the mischief of a World Jewish Congress, and the impossibility of bringing together a body of men who would deserve the right to speak and act on behalf of worldwide Jewry. Evidently the more radical element in the American Jewish Congress has yielded to the better judgment of their calmer associates.
