Interesting figures on the Anglicization of British Jews are given in the following editorial in the London Jewish Chronicle:
According to the latest published figures, the number of aliens in England and Wales dropped from some 280,000 in the year 1911 to some 230,000 in 1921. In the following decade they dwindled still further to some 180,000. In twenty years, therefore, their number has fallen by 100,000, or more than a third. Even the past three years, with their improved trade and German refugee influx, registered not an increase but a small drop. Clearly there is no “aliens problem” in this country, though whether the diminution of neighborly contacts with members of other nations is a moral or political gain in these times is another matter. Owing to the absence of a religious census it is impossible to say exactly how many of the 180,000 aliens in the country three years ago were Jews. Assuming that the 55,000 enumerated Russians and Poles were such, and omitting the smaller numbers of the other nationalities, we should arrive at a total of 55,000 foreign-born Jews in our community of 350,000. The Anglicization of British Jewry, even making allowance for foreign-born Jews in Scotland not included in the present figures, is proceeding apace. It is the greatest revolution in our communal history, though a silent one!
SPOKESMAN URGES JEWISH PRESS WEEK
Suggesting that a Jewish Press Week of the Anglo-Jewish press of America be arranged, The Spokesman of Louisville, Kywrites:
B’nai B’rith, the American Jewish Committee, the American Jewish Congress, the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, the Rabbinical Assembly of America, and the Agudas Rabbonim, would all cooperate in a Jewish Press Week sponsored on a national scale properly arranged by the news services and financed by the newspapers taking part.
From a local standpoint, the cooperation would, of necessity have to be arranged by the participating papers. However, the local publications would have little difficulty what with the okeh and sponsorship of the national groups. The cost to the Anglo-Jewish press would be very nominal, and the results may be astonishing. Certain it is, that with the passing years. Jewish Press Week would become an institution in American Jewish life.
