The trial of Menahem Alkalay, a 24-year-old Jew, charged with participating in the attack made on June 17 on the Haifa railway workshops, opened here today in a British military court. Eighteen Jewish youths were sentenced to death recently for their part in the same raid.
Alkalay, who previously was detained in a military hospital in Haifa because of severe wounds which he suffered during an exchange of fire, was brought into the courtroom on a stretcher with his legs still in plaster casts.
He made a brief statement to the court that he considered himself a prisoner of war, and asked treatment as such. Then he requested a Bible and lay on his stretche chanting psalms, paying no attention to the proceedings and refusing to answer any questions.
