Wreaths were placed on the sidewalk in front of the Iraqi Mission to the United Nations here last week by 18 nationally prominent persons protesting the hangings in Iraq of alleged spies for Israel and the United States. The group included Roman Catholic and Protestant clergymen, Negro civil rights leaders, educators and figures from the sports and entertainment world.
Among them were Dr. Harry Gideonse, chancellor of the New School; Joseph Monserrat, president of the New York City Board of Education; Roy Wilkins, executive director of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People; Bayard Rustin, civil rights leader; Father C.J. McNaspy and Father John B. Sheerin; editors respectively of America Magazine and Catholic World; Rev. Richard Neuhaus, pastor of St. John the Evangelist Lutheran Church, and Rev. Canon William S. Van Meter, executive secretary of Christian Social Relations, Council of Churches, New York City; playwrights Dore Schary and Murray Schisgal; actresses Ina Ballin and Gila Golan; and Emil Griffith, former world’s welterweight and middleweight boxing champion.
