The World Zionist Organization Executive issued a call to “the entire Jewish people to stand fast against the anti-Zionist and anti-Semitic attack” adopted by the General Assembly’s Third Committee. All Jews around the world were urged to wear lapel buttons carrying the legend; “I am a Zionist.”
Acting WZO chairman Leon Dulzin and Avraham Shenker, head of the WZO information department, announced the world-wide effort to newsmen in Jerusalem. The WZO Executive pointed out in a statement that the required two-thirds majority for the plenary vote at the Assembly is not yet guaranteed for the Arabs. Therefore, Jewish communities and organizations around the world must redouble their efforts to persuade wavering governments, by bringing the weight of enlightened public opinion to bear, to desist from supporting the Arabs, the statement said.
The Executive resolved to cable its thanks to U.S. Ambassador Daniel Moynihan for his stand during the debate, and also to inform the Ambassadors in Israel of all states who had opposed the resolution of the WZO’s appreciation. The Jewish communities of Brazil, Chile and Mexico, whose governments supported the draft, will be asked to intercede at the highest levels to try to secure a change of stance at the General Assembly.
A resolution condemning the UN action was also adopted yesterday by the Jewish Agency Board of Governors. It called on Zionist and Jewish organizations all over the world to demonstrate their appreciation to those countries that voted against the Third Committee draft and to muster all of their resources to convince UN delegations to support Zionism as “the liberation movement of the Jewish people.”
