The World Zionist Organization now ranks as the world’s largest Jewish voluntary body with a membership amounting to 10 percent of the world’s Jewish population, it was presented in a report on the results of a one-year world-wide membership drive and census made public here yesterday. According to Avraham Schenker, head of the Jewish Agency’s organization and information department, Zionist enrollment stands at 850,000 persons in 40 countries, Schenker’s report said the membership includes many Jews who never belonged to a Jewish organization in the past, among them intellectuals and New Leftists. The persons who responded to the census were over 18 years of age, primarily heads of families. In the U.S., 650,000 persons are registered as Zionists, accounting for ten percent of the Jewish population.
