Yasser Arafat hailed the opening of a new airport in the Gaza Strip as a step toward Palestinian statehood. The airport will “pave the way to Jerusalem, the capital of Palestine,” he said at the inaugural ceremony. A flight from Egypt was the first to arrive, followed by planes from Egypt, Morocco, Spain, Jordan and Israel.
