New concepts in medical education will be introduced by the medicals school of the Yeshiva University here, the first non sectarian medical college under Jewish sponsor ship, it was announced at a press conference today by Dr. Harry Zimmerman, newly-appointed director of the school.
Dr. Zimmerman said that revolutionary methods in medical teaching will take place in seven major areas: fluidity of curriculum, socio-economic aspects, home care, ethical practices, preventive medicine, legal medicine, and group practice. He disclosed that a number of leading medical educators are already being considered for positions in the school.
“The school is scheduled ultimately to have a staff of 400, and will maintain at all times the highest professional standards, “he stated, adding that it will take several months to assemble the nucleus of the faculty. The opening class will consist of 100 students. Ultimately the college will consist of a student body of 400, which Dr. Zimmerman termed “just about right to enable us to do the best job.” He emphasized that no distinction with regard to race, creed or national origin will be made in the admission of students.
It is estimated that the entire Yeshiva University medical center will cost $25,000,000. A campaign is now under way to secure the money necessary to open the first unit of the center, which will be the medical school. The next unit is to be a dental school, which is expected to be opened by the Fall of 1955. Construction on the medical building is scheduled to start during the Fall of 1952.
