Yeshiva University announced today it had started the first educational program specifically designed to prepare students for teaching at the Jewish high school level.
The program, leading to a master’s degree, has been developed by the religious education department at Yeshiva University’s Ferkauf graduate school of humanities and social sciences. Dr. Alvin I. Schiff, department chairman, said that the rapid growth of Jewish elementary day schools in the past 20 years had substantially increased the number of students entering Jewish day high schools, which now total 60 in the United States and Canada, compared with six in 1945.
Dr. Schiff said that despite this growth, none of the nation’s Hebrew teachers colleges or universities had developed programs for teaching in Jewish high schools.
