Herbert S. Shapiro of Brooklyn, a student at Columbia University and a former pupil of the Hebrew Institute of Boro Park, a Jewish Parochial school affiliated with the United Hebrew Chest, has been awarded a poste d’assistance scholarship in France for the year 1930-1931 by the French Ministry of Public Instruction, it was reported by the United Yeshivah Chest. The recipient of the scholarship, which carries with it tuition, board and lodging and general expenses for a year of study at a French lycee or ecole normale, is expected to be assistant to the professor of English at the Lycee. He is also expected to pursue studies at a French University.
Seven such scholarships are awarded annually by the French government to select American students. Among the seven selected this year, Mr. Shapiro is the only undergraduate and New Yorker. He was a member of the 1928 Columbia football squad.
