The collection of Yiddish books at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem has increased to more than 7,500 as a result of a gift of $5,000 from David Shapiro, publisher of the New York Yiddish Day, according to a report received by the American Advisory Committee of the Hebrew University, of which Felix M. Warburg is chairman. Important Yiddish collections from the late Dr. Chaim Spivak’s library in Denver and the library of the late Dr. Joseph Hazanovich of Warsaw have also been received by the library of the Hebrew University.
One Arab student, the report states, has registered this year at the Jerusalem University. The student group this year includes one student from Canada and a large group from Poland. During the past semester, sixty students registered in the course in Hebrew literature conducted by Prof. Joseph Klausner, this being the largest registration for any course.
Dr. Hugo Bergmann, librarian of the Hebrew University, also reports that among the most valuable contributions received by the library recently are the gifts of Emanuel Hertz of New York City. Books written in various languages used by Jews are being collected by the university library.
