The first chair for the Yiddish language and culture and Holocuast studies in Latin America will be inaugurated shortly at the Catholic University in Sao Paulo. The chair has a $200,000 endowment to be administered by a committee headed by Sao Paulo industrialist Michael Woideslawsky.
The Catholic University has campuses in six cities. The Sao Paulo campus, with over 10,000 students, many of them Jewish, is considered one of the best. The establishment of a chair in Yiddish and Holocaust studies was first proposed by Dr. Jose Knoplich, president of the Sao Paulo Jewish Federation.
There are chairs in Hebrew at the State University in Rio de Janeiro and at the Federal University in Sao Paulo. They have a combined enrollment of over 300 students, most of them non-Jewish.
