The National Science Foundation, a United States Government-sponsored body, has agreed to finance the preparation of a Yiddish language and culture “atlas,” it was announced here today at the 35th annual conference of the Yivo Institute for Jewish Research.
The atlas is being compiled by Dr. Uriel Weinreich Professor of Language and Yiddish Studies at Columbia University, who reported on the project to the conference. The grant by the Foundation, which was described as substantial, marks the first time that a U.S. Government body is actively participating in a research project on the Yiddish language.
