Gov. Albert P. Brewer disclosed today that he had directed all universities and colleges in Alabama to permit the absence of Jewish students on September 22, the Day of Atonement, “as an excused absence in observance of Yom Kippur.” Gov. Brewer acted at the request of Col. Rubin M. Hanan of Montgomery.
The governor made no reference to high schools and elementary schools but arrangements were being made by Jewish leaders to draw the executive’s decision to the attention of local school boards with the request that they excuse the absence of Jewish pupils on the holy days.
