A twenty-two year old Chalutz, Moishe Bernzweig, committed suicide today by jumping into the Danube. Bernzweig was stranded in Vienna, while en route to Palestine, owing to a lack of funds and necessary documents.
About four hundred young Chalutzim, mainly from Poland, are now stranded in Vienna unable to proceed on their journey to Palestine because they are not in possession of the necessary documents. The Austrian Government at first thought of repatriating many of them, but on the intervention of the Palestine Emigration Office in Vienna, which gave certain guarantees that they would not stay long in Austria, they have been given permission to remain temporarily.
Most of them are without means, and as the Zionist Organization has no funds available for maintaining them during their stay in Vienna, a private committee has been formed to raise funds for their maintenance until they obtain their documents, and to provide them with travelling costs where necessary.
