Young Israeli couples set up a mock “refugee camp” yesterday in the middle of a plaza in one of Tel Aviv’s wealthier neighborhoods to protest the high cost of housing. They erected tents and posted placards demanding that the government build flats at reasonable prices.
“We want flats like new immigrants.” one sign said. Another read, “Our children and grandchildren would have to pay the mortgage we are compelled to take.” The demonstrators were members of the Haolam Hazeh New Force, a movement recently organized by Knesset member Uri Avner, that reportedly includes young married couples from all over Israel.
