With infants in their arms and small children clustering around, about 100 young couples from Kiryat Motzkin, near Haifa, went into the fourth day of a sit-in at the Ministry of Housing to protest the high cost of flats and alleged discrimination against them.
According to the couples, they are being charged more for flats than couples enrolled in an identical government housing scheme in nearby Kiryat Haim. They say their monthly mortgage charges will be IL 380 compared to IL 260 in the neighboring town.
Representatives of the protestors waited in vain yesterday for four hours in the Knesset building to see the ministers of finance or housing. Finance Minister Pinhas Sapir, on his way out of the Knesset, told them curtly to end their sit-in and send a delegation to see the Housing Minister next week. The protestors say that Housing Minister Zeev Sharef has refused to talk to them. They said they would not leave the ministry until one of the ministers talks to them directly.
