A Jewish youth group that claims to be interested in the survival of Yiddish will start picketing New York’s two Yiddish daily newspapers tomorrow to protest what it considers to be their antiquated style, language and content. An announcement by Yugntruf–Youth for Yiddish– said the picketing would continue through Sunday, though not on Saturday. The group described itself as an organization of Yiddish-speaking high school and college students who find themselves unable to read the Jewish Daily Forward and the Day-Morning Journal because they use “an antiquated German-like spelling and dozens of obsolete Germanisms and Anglicisms not admissable in the standard Yiddish taught in all schools and colleges.” The youngsters charged that “The contents of these newspapers is geared, moreover, to the interests of the immigrant grandparent generation and the younger reader consequently finds little that appeals to his interests and concerns.” They contrasted New York’s two Yiddish dailies, the only Yiddish dailies in the country, with Yiddish newspapers published in Israel. France and Mexico. They cited the lack of sports news or news of Jewish youth activities and organizations.
